Last endurance and heat test at the German Championships

Mario Müller

17. September 2023

The players of the German national team passed the final endurance test three weeks before the 5th Ring Tennis World Championships. Even more important for national coach Timo Hufnagel: There were no new injuries at the 74th German Championships from September 8th to 10th in Rossdorf after Team Germany had to do without the reigning individual world champions Nicole Brose and Fabian Ziegler in Pretoria. With very high temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius in late summer, the ultimate individual discipline was not only about national titles, but also about the German ranking for the individual World Championships. In the women's final, Naemi Singrün turned the tables and won 35:34 against defending champion Henrike Jansen. The preliminary round game between the two equal opponents ended with a one-point victory for Henrike. In the men's final, Maurice Binder played an almost perfect second half against Timo and was clearly the stronger player on the field in the comfortable 46:21 victory. In addition to the singles, the World Cup disciplines of mixed and alternating doubles were played in Rossdorf, as well as the fourth discipline, the classic doubles.

03. September 2023

A good 5 weeks before the departure to Johannesburg, the Technical Committee determined the leadership structure for its multi-member World Championships 2023 delegation at a special virtual meeting on August 21. The highest management body of the DTB sport Ringtennis confirmed the intensive preparatory work of national coach Timo Hufnagel, who held countless personal talks with the candidates. With Nina Krust (28 years) a physiotherapist steeled in numerous hard handball games is available to the team. Team Manager Silke von Aschwege (49 years old) has already organized the flights for the delegation. Team Captain Women is Michaela Güthling (34 years), who was elected by the team after the cancellation of Nicole Brose due to injury, as well as Hendrik Freitag (25 years). The two coaches Timo Hufnagel (45 years) and Hendrik Freitag have successfully led the national players through the preparation period, which was extended twice due to World Cup cancellations. Klaus Riehm (59 years old) was even up for consideration as head of delegation; however, he is now taking on the difficult position of Umpire. Alexander Wiss (21 years old) is responsible for public relations and can rely on the support of Stefan Edelmann, who manages the homepage for the South African organizers and will thus disseminate the results worldwide. Head of delegation is Axel Runkel (59 years old), who already led the World Championship delegations in 2014 and 2018.

With this, organizer South Africa can be satisfied after only 8 months of preparation: Five nations from four continents are participating from September 30 to October 7 in Pretoria. Besides the three WTF founding members host South Africa, world champion Germany and India, Hong Kong and USA have entered some individual competitors. World Cup debutant Hong Kong is sending four players, making it the 10th nation to actively compete in world title matches. Admission of the new Ringtennis friends from the Chinese Special Administrative Region to the World Tenniquoits Federation previously is considered a formality. The USA will again be represented by a singles competitor who already wore 'Stars and Stripes' at the last World Championships. Painfully missed will be the Basque Country, Belarus and Canada, who will not be able to participate after the postponement of the 2023 World Championships. Since the Ringo-country Poland will not make the long journey to the Cape, as it did in 2014, the competition organizers canceled the Ringo competition on October 5. South Africa Ringtennis brought new momentum to the event with their idea of U23 Tri-Nations Championships in the individual disciplines and team competition. The large Indian and German delegations will ensure a record number of participants for World Championships in Ringtennis.

A large part of the German delegation will travel by Lufthansa flight on Tuesday evening, September 26 at 10:05 p.m. on an overnight direct flight to Johannesburg, where arrival is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning after a 10-hour flight. National coach Timo Hufnagel attaches great importance to a reasonable acclimatization to the altitude of 1,300 meters and average temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius in the capital. Since it is not possible for everyone to arrive so early for professional reasons, the vast majority of the remaining delegation members will arrive at the official WM2023 hotel by check-in time on the day before the week of competition. The return flight will leave on Sunday evening at 9 pm with hopefully some trophies in the suitcase; the German delegation is expected back in Frankfurt/M on Monday morning, 9 October at 5:35. The Indian delegation of more than 50 people will take a different route. For cost reasons, they will arrive later and travel back one day earlier on Saturday morning, October 7 from and to Bombay with Ethiopian Airlines with a stopover in Addis Ababa. The Indians will therefore finish their team competitions already on Friday and thus miss the award ceremony and closing event.

The South African ringtennis players have always had a soft spot for devotional objects to remember great events for a long time. For their home World Cup in 2023 they have come up with something very special: 26 different “World Championships memorabilia” are on display in an online shop, which users can purchase. From drinking cups, caps, key rings up toT-shirts or earrings - all with the official WC2023 logo - useful memorabilia worth €2 to €30 are on offer. The sale of these merchandising products will benefit a good cause. The 'Club 500', a kind of South African circle of friends for ring tennis, manages the income.

The last name Kruger is very common in South Africa. Not only the world-famous game reserve and the national currency Rand are named after the founding father of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. No wonder, then, that Theuns Kruger and daughter Louise, two of the four leading figures on the Local Organizing Committee, answer to this name. The other two are the internationally better known Jeanette de la Rey and Yolanda van Staden. With wife Riana, Theuns ensures as tournament director that the competitions will run smoothly. With Vanessa Luus, the Metropolitans have installed a safety officer. Young Brandon Norton takes care of the good sound and the technology on the facility. The German Stefan Edelmann has made himself available to take care of the official homepage. All in all, the eight-member committee has a pleasingly large amount of female power!

About two weeks before the official registration of the teams for the fifth World Tenniquoits Championships in Pretoria, it is certain that the German delegation including a supporter group will fly into South Africa in record numbers. Only Tatjana Schutte (RTG Weidenau) from the team originally nominated for the home World Championships will miss the postponed world title matches for private reasons. National coach Timo Hufnagel has nominated Kaja Stöhrer (TV Kieselbronn) instead. With 8 team world champions and 8 rookies, Team Germany will tackle the project of defending the title. Klaus Riehm (TSV Neubiberg), Silke von Aschwege (ESG Karlsruhe) and a handball physiotherapist from Pforzheim will join the coaching staff. A small team of 11 adult junior players (5 male and 6 female players) has been designated for the additional competitions for U23 teams organized by host South Africa. Among them are Elisa Kolonka (TV Kieselbronn) and Alexander Wiß (TV Rübenach), who are designated as substitutes for the national team. The 30-member German delegation plans to arrive three days before the competitions start to adjust to the altitude of over 1,300 meters. More than 20 family members, club members and ringtennis fans plan to accompany and support the team!
